5 Tips for Mastering Working from Home

The Prewitt Group is committed to meeting the needs of clients in an everchanging world. Setting a few guidelines for success in a remote work environment can feel like a big task, but will be rewarding once the work day is finished. You’ll be ahead of the game just as you would be in the office following your normal routine.

  1. Keep a schedule.
    • Many enjoy the commute to work that helps set their day in motion. When we wake up “in the office” while working remotely, there isn’t much separation or a window of time that we use to gear up for work and wind down on the way home. Make sure that you stick to a set amount of time for working remotely so your house still feels like home.
  2. Take routine breaks.
    • Enjoy stepping away from your workspace like you typically might at work for a coffee break or taking a breath of fresh air outside. Walking for a few minutes at the end of the day also establishes the separation of work and home.
  3. Tell your team how to communicate best with you and each other.
    • Share how you prefer to check-in during the day whether it’s over chat, email, video conference or phone. Let your team know that they can reach you and when you prefer to have updates about important to-do’s for the week.
  4. Remember company culture.
    • Without water cooler chat and time dedicated to celebrating birthdays, work anniversaries or big wins in the office, it can feel a little lonely or isolated. Try sending e-cards or even appropriate GIFs to share a smile throughout the week.
  5. Protect your home office.
    • Even if you do not have an entire room dedicated to a workspace, be sure that you have what you need to get the job done. If it is at the kitchen table or a spare bedroom, give yourself the tools – printers, pens or software – that you need. You’ll feel equipped to do your best even if it’s a new workspace.
