Staff Accountant

We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our growing risk management agency. This position plays a key role in the day-to-day accounting operations of the company and is ideal for someone who enjoys taking ownership of their work, solving problems, and contributing to a collaborative team environment.

The ideal candidate is flexible, proactive, and willing to take on a variety of accounting responsibilities while continuously looking for ways to improve processes and efficiencies.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage the full accounts payable process, including invoice processing and vendor payments.
  • Oversee accounts receivable functions, including invoicing, collections, and customer account reconciliation.
  • Deposit and accurately record client payments and insurance carrier commission checks.
  • Record and reconcile daily bank activity.
  • Prepare, review, and post journal entries.
  • Perform monthly and year-end general ledger account reconciliations.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Process and reconcile agency bill transactions.
  • Reconcile direct bill commission statements and investigate discrepancies.
  • Work with insurance carriers and internal teams to resolve billing, commission, and accounting issues.
  • Assist with accounting functions related to Applied Epic, Ascend, or other agency management systems (experience preferred but not required).
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies while identifying opportunities to improve processes and internal controls.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with audits, financial reporting, and special accounting projects.
  • Support the accounting department with various responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of bookkeeping and/or accounting experience required; insurance agency accounting experience is a strong plus.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Experience with agency bill accounting, direct bill commissions, or insurance accounting is highly desirable.
  • Experience with Applied Epic, Ascend, or similar agency management/accounting systems is a plus.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with accounting software.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.

What You’ll Do (Essential Functions included but not limited to)

  • Manage the full renewal cycle from marketing to policy delivery
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships
  • Review policies, endorsements, audits, and documentation for accuracy
  • Provide coverage guidance and technical expertise to clients
  • Process endorsements, certificates, binders, evidence of property, and related documents
  • Conduct renewal analysis and manage premium collection
  • Ensure compliance with insurance regulations
  • Partner with Producers to support retention and account growth

What You Bring

  • 3–5 years of Commercial Lines experience (required)
  • Active Property & Casualty License (required or ability to obtain immediately)
  • Strong knowledge of commercial coverage
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Professional communication style and client-facing confidence
  • Ability to manage accounts independently while collaborating with a team
